The following list is from the Campbell Union High District Athletics Hall of Fame. This was compiled in part by legendary district teacher and coach Earl Adams. As a member of the Hartnell football team, Earl was part of the legendary Pasadena Bowl game in 1952. After a stint in the Korean war, he began his career in the CUHSD. He coached Leigh to a football championship. He went to Prospect when it opened, and later went to the district office as the district athletics coordinator.
The first organized Campbell high school athletic team was boys track in 1902. The first athletic contest won by a Campbell High School team was the girls basketball team in 1903. They defeated Mt. View High by a score of 8 to 2! The first football team at Campbell High School was fielded in 1935, coached by Bill Burt.

Bill was a 6 time Pro Bowl receiver with the San Francisco 49ers. He is only one of 9 receivers in NFL history to lead the league in receptions 3 different seasons.

John was so good at Campbell High (Player of the Year in the Santa Clara Athletic League), he received interest from several major league teams but chose to get a college degree from SJSU. where he still holds 2 pitching records. Was the first Humboldt Crab (minor league team) to play in the majors. Played with the Cincinnati Reds, then went on to a long coaching career. He coached San Jose City College to 5 conference titles, and led the Santa Clara University Broncos to 3 WCC titles.
Was AAU swimming champion 1958.
NCAA All American in Judo at San Jose State.
NCAA All American in football at UCLA. Was drafted by the NFL but turned it down in order to travel the world. He then signed on with the Toronto Argonauts and played 6 years in the Canadian Football League. Described by a teammate as “California hippie, surfing-type dude with long hair”.
Member of the U.S.Olympic swim team in both 1968 and 1972.
NCAA Basketball Finalist and NCAA All American Tennis UCLA. Rich played basketball under legendary coach John Wooden at UCLA and was a member of the final four team in 1962. He played tennis at UCLA with Arthur Ashe. A member of the Colorado sports hall of Fame, he later coached at the Air Force Academy. He is the winningest coach at Air Force of any sport, and in tennis is the 4th winningest Division I coach in history.
NCAA All American University of California,Berkeley. At one time held almost every passing record for Cal. National Football League-Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos. Was the first player to start a Super Bowl for two different teams.
Keith played basketball for UOP. He was West Coast Conference player of the year two times. Led UOP to its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1963. Led the school to the tournament again in 1964 and knocked off the defending champions. Graduated as UOP’s all time rebounder. Played 2 seasons in the American Basketball Association.

Played Major League Baseball with the San Francisco Giants.
Played 7 seasons for 5 teams in major League baseball. Was one of the original Montreal Expos, and played in the 1973 World Series with the New York Mets.
Dennis played for Santa Clara University. Led Santa Clara to the NCAA tournament 3 consecutive years. Was a 3 time Academic All-American. Drafted into the NBA by the Philadelphia 76ers, and spent 12 seasons in the NBA with 5 different teams. Won an NBA title with the Seattle Supersonics.and knocked off the defending champions. Graduated as UOP’s all time rebounder. Played 2 seasons in the American Basketball Association.

Bill is still the all time Del Mar scoring leader in basketball. Played 3 years on varsity at University of Oregon. Drafted by the Warriors but played 7 seasons of pro basketball in Europe instead. His interest in journalism led to being a war correspondent in the Middle East, a Pulitzer prize nominee, and many years as the Washington Posts’ chief European correspondent. He has authored several books, the latest published in 2020.

Played for UC Berkeley and received his degree in biological sciences.. Drafted into the National Football League in 1973 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Played 11 seasons for the Steelers, and was a 4 time Super Bowl champion with the Steelers.
A pitcher, Doug spent 6 years in major League Baseball, playing with the Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, and Giants.
All American in swimming. All League is 3 sports. Played football on a scholarship for Stanford. Eric got a call back from the Oakland Raiders training camp but chose to go to medical school instead.

Claudia won the 1970 AAU title in breaststroke. She was part of the medley team that set a world record in the women’s 4 x 100 medley relay in 1971. In 1972, she was a member of the US Olympic swimming team in Munich.

Steve played baseball for Stanford University, then in the majors for the Chicago Cubs.
Ray was a Pac-12 All conference while playing for UCLA. He was the first pick of the Warriors in the 1978 NBA draft. He was the first Filipino-American to play in the NBA.

Mark set 2 freshman track records at Prospect, and continued to set records for the next 3 years, at track meets and at CCS Championships.
Dan went undrafted from college but debuted as an outfielder for the SF Giants in July 1983, despite lacking experience. After being traded to the Minnesota Twins, he started as left fielder on their championship teams in 1987 and 1991. In the 1987 World Series, he hit a grand slam, the first in 17 years. In Game 7 of the 1991 Series, he turned a broken bat hit into a double and scored the winning run. He later played in Japan, winning a championship, and became a broadcaster for the Twins.
Kit played football at West valley College and ASU. In the NFL, he played for the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington redskins. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins in 1987.

NCAA Pole Vault Champion. A 3 time All American, setting several school records. Would have been on the 1980 Olympics team but that was the year the U.S. boycotted the Olympics.
Played in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers.
Mark, a 6’11” power forward-center, set scoring records at Cal and was drafted 22nd by the Philadelphia 76ers. In his rookie year, he won an NBA championship with Moses Malone and Dr. J. He later played for the Spurs and Lakers. After retiring, he moved to Alaska and got back into basketball, coaching Haines High School to two state titles. He also made skiing documentaries and was a stand-in for Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca in “Return of the Jedi,” leading to a role in “Ewoks: Battle for Endor.”

Meredith was an NCAA All-American swimmer at USC.
Roger played baseball and basketball at Branham.He was League MVP in 1979. That year, as a pitcher and outfielder, he helped take Branham to the CCS title game against Carmel. After graduation he played at San Jose City college and Santa Clara University. In July 1988, his dream of playing Major League Baseball came true when he took the mound for his hometown San Francisco Giants! When his major league career ended, he continued to coach baseball, and worked with the Junior Giants Foundation.

Ken was an NCAA All American at San Jose State. He was drafted into Major League Baseball by the Houston Astros. In his major league debut, he hit a home run, a triple, and scored the game winning run. In 1994 he signed with the San Diego Padres. In 1966 Ken became only the 5th player ever to be unanimously voted the National League’s Most Valuable Player. He appeared in 3 all star games, and won the Golden Glove award 3 times.
A 4 time National champion, Amy was an NCAA All American in track and cross country at Cal Poly, San Luis Obsispo. She won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1982 and 1983. Won the National Championship in both the 1500 meters and 5,00 meters in 1983. She still holds the Cal Poly record in the 5,000 meters event.

Steve was a 4 sport athlete at Westmont. Received a scholarship to Santa Clara University and started as a freshman. Selected by the New York Giants in the 1986 NFL draft.
Sue was a highly prized gymnast who chose University of Utah. Once the NCAA began sponsoring women’s gymnastics, Sue became the first ever NCAA All Around Champion. Winning the balance beam as well, she also became the first ever NCAA women’s double winner.

CCS swimming champion. Mike still holds the school record for the 100 meter butterfly. Swam for Texas A&M, where he was an All American and record holder in the 100 meter freestyle.
In 1986, 2 seniors-Beth Varozza, Marguerite Oneto; a sophomore-Pam Sweetland; and a freshman -Joyce Murphy, formed a freestyle team that not only won 2nd place at CCS Championships, they created a school record that has yet to be broken. Led by these swimmers, the Prospect varsity swim team had 6 WVAL wins under its belt and placed 3rd overall at the CCS championships.
